Training Workforce For Semiconductor Industry At Colleges

On August 16, 2024, at Cao Thang Technical College held a workshop on 'Developing a skilled workforce for the semiconductor industry at Technical colleges', co-chaired by the General Directorate of Vocational Training and the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City.

Attending the workshop were Mr. Truong Anh Dung, Director General of General Directorate of Vocational Training; Mr. Dao Trong Do, Director of Continuing Education Department; Ms. Huynh Le Nhu Trang, Deputy Director of Department of Labour, War invalids and Social affairs of Ho Chi Minh City; Mr. Nguyen Chi Thanh, Head of Vocational Education Department, Department of Labour, War invalids and Social affairs of Ho Chi Minh City; and Representative of Department of Personnel and Organization - Ministry of Industry and Trade; 

The guests of the workshop are leading Vietnamese experts in the field of Semiconductors such as: Prof. Dr. Dang Luong Mo - Honorary Professor of HOSEI University, Tokyo, Japan, Advisor to Ho Chi Minh City National University, Honorary President of Ho Chi Minh City Semiconductor Association; Dr. Nguyen Anh Thi – Director of the Management Board of Ho Chi Minh City High-Tech Park, Dr. Nguyen Minh Son, Dean of Faculty of Computer Engineering - University of Information Technology - VNU-HCM; Mr. Quach Vinh in charge of Community Engagement Manager and Mr. Nguyen Van Huynh - Senior Technical Program Manager- Intel Products Việt Nam; Mr. Tran Van Thai - Program Manager for Accreditation and Quality Assurance - Arizona State University (ASU) | Representative Office in Vietnam; Mr. Nguyen Quoc Tuan - Director of TUMIKI Joint Stock Company.

Other guests who also attended the workshop were members of the Industrial Advisory Board from companies that employ graduates majoring in electronics and electronics communications from CTTC. Along with the guests were principals, vice principals, teachers and leaders of faculties from 25 colleges and universities in Vietnam interested in training in the field of semiconductors and microchips;

After the speech of Dr. Le Dinh Kha - Principal of CTTC, Mr. Truong Anh Dung - Director General of General Directorate of Vocational Training and Ms. Huynh Le Nhu Trang - Deputy Director of Department of Labour, War invalids and Social affairs of Ho Chi Minh City about the importance and some development directions of training human resources for the semiconductor industry in Vietnam, Mr. Nguyen Van Huynh - Senior Technical Program Manager of Intel Products Vietnam shared an overview of the assembly and testing process, about smart manufacturing that will be applied at Intel Products Vietnam factory in the near future. At the workshop, Mr. Huynh also shared about the milestones and technical developments of a graduate from Cao Thang Technical College who is currently working at Intel Vietnam.

From the perspective of an employer at Intel Products Vietnam Company, Mr. Huynh highly appreciates the role of human resource training in the semiconductor industry. And these are his opinions about training in semiconductor industry:

- Basic technical knowledge: This is the core and important factor for learners to understand and solve technical problems effectively.

- Professional attitude and work ethic: Strict adherence to safety regulations and standards are compulsory requires. In addition, the ability to complete the work on time are also qualities that should be emphasized during training.

- Self-learning and knowledge updating: In an keep changing industry like the semiconductor industry, self-learning and the knowledge updating are very important.

With the presentation "ATP Semiconductor Human Resource Training Initiative in Vietnam" - Mr. Tran Van Thai - from the Representative Office of Arizona State University shared his commitment to supporting Universities and Colleges in Vietnam in training lecturers to serve the semiconductor industry. Following the success of the projects: HEEAP, VULII, BUILD-IT; the STIC - Science, Technology, and Innovation Cooperation Program project is being implemented with the goal of implementing additional activities for the ASEAN Action Plan on Science, Technology and Innovation (APASTI) for the period 2016-2025.

The lecturers of Cao Thang Technical College has also successfully utilized this learning resource. In particular, the Semiconductors Technologies field has had 10 lecturers certified.

Arizona State University is also implementing the ITSI - International Technology Security and Innovation project. With the desire to enhance the capacity of semiconductor Assembly, Testing and Packaging (ATP) in ITSI partner countries in the Americas and the Indo-Pacific. The main content that ITSI aims to help schools improve ATP training programs on semiconductors by providing lecturers in ITSI partner countries, including Vietnam, a model and design support to implement programs at universities and colleges.

In addition, speaking at the workshop were also Prof. Dr. Dang Luong Mo - Honorary Professor of HOSEI University, Tokyo, Japan, Advisor to Ho Chi Minh City National University, Honorary President of Ho Chi Minh City Semiconductor Association; Dr. Nguyen Minh Son, Dean of Faculty of Computer Engineering - University of Information Technology - VNU-HCM; Mr. Nguyen Quoc Tuan - Director of TUMIKI Joint Stock Company.

With more than 130 participants attending, including guests and experts from businesses in need of human resources in the semiconductor industry, along with 25 universities and colleges nationwide, the workshop was considered a great success, providing support for Vietnamese colleges with better opportunities and preparation when participating in training in this field with great potential and challenges.
